For my wife’s birthday a few months ago, I wanted to do something nice. She has always complained that we had cheap and uncomfortable bed sheets, so I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to surprise her with a nice set of sheets from Linen Chest sheets from Linen Chest and show her that I have been listening.
Of course, I had a lot to learn.
Here are a few tips I learned when it comes to buying sheets:
Cotton is King
For one, cotton is still king. Yes, there are poly-cotton sheets and flannel sheets, but cotton is by far the best. Natural cotton breathes a lot better than poly-cotton, making it a lot more comfortable. Having a set of flannel sheets on hand during the extremely cold winter nights would be great, but if you’re on a budget, having one set of quality cotton sheets should be plenty.
Egyptian or Supima?
There are two types of cotton: Egyptian and Supima. There isn’t too much of a difference between the two, and it comes down to preference here. Most people go for the Egyptian cotton when they’re looking to spend a little money because it’s synonymous with luxury. For some reason, though, telling people that you slept on Egyptian cotton last night feels almost as good as the sheets.
Thread Count Matters!
When it comes to thread count, 200 or more is best. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the sheets will be. Higher thread count means that they will be more expensive. Considering we spend almost a 1/3rd of our lives in bed, it’s well worth it.
It’s not always about brand names
As consumers, our first instinct is to go for the name brand if we want quality. Well, that’s definitely not the case when it comes to bed sheets. Nothing against brand loyalty here (some people really like Calvin Klein anything and that’s fine), but buying a big name brand can be a waste of money because most bedding companies–large or small–use the same type of fabric. There’s truly very little difference between the two sheets.
Knowing these things about bed sheets will undoubtedly make you (or that special person in your life) happy. And yes…I slept on 400 thread count Egyptian cotton last night.
